Project Description

CYR Painting Service completed this cabinet repaint project for a homeowner in New Gloucester, ME, transforming a dated built-in into a striking focal point with a rich, modern finish.

The 2-day project gave this functional storage piece a complete color change using premium cabinet-grade paint.

Background/Story:

The homeowner wanted to update their built-in without the cost of a full replacement. The existing cabinetry was structurally sound but the color no longer matched their evolving design preferences. They needed a professional finish that could stand up to daily use—one that would look great for years to come.

CYR Painting Service provided a solution that delivered the look of new custom cabinetry at a fraction of the cost.

Scope of Services

  • Full color change on built-in cabinetry — Complete transformation from the original finish to a modern deep green tone selected by the homeowner.
  • Surface preparation and cleaning of all painted surfaces — Degreasing, light sanding, and cleaning to remove residue and create proper adhesion for the new finish.
  • Professional application on cabinet doors, drawer fronts, and face frames — Multiple coats applied for a smooth, consistent finish with no visible brush marks or imperfections.

Paints/Products Used

  • INSL-X Stix Waterborne Bonding Primer — This acrylic-urethane primer from Benjamin Moore is a professional favorite for cabinet work. Stix delivers strong adhesion on challenging surfaces including previously finished wood, glossy paints, and sealed substrates. It cures to an extremely hard film, levels smoothly, and provides excellent holdout for the topcoat. Its waterborne formula means low odor and easy cleanup—ideal for on-site work in occupied homes.
  • Gemini Evo Eclipse in Vintage Vogue (Topcoat) — This high-performance waterborne cabinet coating was applied as the finish coat. Gemini Evo Eclipse was named Best Finishing Material of 2023 by FDMC Magazine and is trusted by professional cabinetmakers across North America. The product offers low VOCs, minimal odor, fast dry times, and levels smoothly for a factory-quality finish.

    The
Vintage Vogue color is a deep, smoky green with subtle olive and charcoal undertones—a sophisticated shade that pairs naturally with the natural wood shelving and brass hardware the client chose to keep.

Note: The natural wood surfaces on the shelving and bench seat were left unpainted per the homeowner’s request.
